Emotional Distance

Ivy and Al moments after being pronounced Mrs. and Mr.

I had never photographed a wedding, so when my friends-by-proxy Ivy and Al invited me to be a part of their happy day and take a few photos, I was happy to oblige.

On the plane to Toronto I whiled away the tension-filled hours (I hate flying) reading two books on the subject. Experienced wedding photographers recommend that one maintain an emotional distance, much like a surgeon would with a patient. They also claim the camera guarantees that — especially SLRs, which remain glued to the photographer’s face.

When I arrived in Toronto, I only knew the maid of honor Corinne (the proxy), who also happens to be one of my best friends. And of course, I met Marlena (mega!) one of Ivy and Corinne’s friends who roomed with us. I then met the couple-to-be Ivy and Al very briefly the following day. Then the evening before the wedding I met everyone else. It was an intimate dinner party; friends and family totaled less than 50 people.

But… At the wedding, I found myself not only sharing in the emotions (yes I’m a macho dude so you can imagine how hard that is for me to admit): the excitement and anticipation, then the collectively held breath as the vows were read, and then the tears of joy at the phrase “by the power vested in me…”

By the end of it all, the emotional distance had been reduced to nil. And the photos show it.

Thanks Mona! All this time I thought this comment was from my mom. (Now I realize that when I thanked her the other day she probably had no idea what I was talking about!) x
